Fossil wood from Arizona
Biogenous sedimentary rock.
This sample is a piece of fossil wood of Late Triassic age. The orginal wood tree trunk was likely buried in a coastal swamp by a massive flood or volcanic eruption. It survived microbial decay as the woody material was slowly replaced by silica dissovled in groundwater. It from the Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle Formation Chinle Formation (Triassic age), near Winslow, Arizona.
